About Me

Daniel Kim (b. 2000) is a composer and pianist whose music features strong thematic elements and the recontextualizing of motivic material within varied textures and harmonies. He strives to create storytelling music through sweeping orchestral textures and indelible melodies. His influences span classical, film, and video game music, including Claude Debussy, John Williams, Joe Hisaishi, and Christopher Tin.

Daniel has written for ensembles such as the UT New Music Ensemble, the U.S. Naval Academy Band, the Illinois State University Wind Symphony, and the International Double Reed Society. He is also a composer, arranger, performer, and artistic advisor for the Asian Memory Project, a group that performs music from Asian films and games at family-friendly events.

Daniel holds a bachelor’s degree in composition from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan. His mentors include Bruce Pennycook, Yevgeny Sharlat, Russel Podgorsek, Donald Grantham, Michael Daugherty, and Penka Kouneva.
